Removing Existing Roof
Solar Roof is designed to be installed as a new roof or on top of an existing asphalt shingle roof that is in good condition. If you would like your existing roof replaced, we will remove your existing roof system down to the decking.
If you have chosen not to replace your existing roof, we will assess to confirm if it is eligible to have Solar Roof installed before installation. To qualify, your existing roof must be:
- One layer only
- In good condition without broken shingles or moss and cannot be sagging
- 3-tab composition shingle (dimensional shingles or luxury shingles do not qualify)
3-TAB ASPHALT OR COMPOSITION SHINGLE
DIMENSIONAL, ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLE OR COMPOSITION SHINGLE

The roofing material on your home will determine if you are eligible for having Solar Roof installed on top of your existing roof, or as a new roof. Learn more about your installation eligibility for Solar Roof or solar panels based on roof type.

Solar Roof Installation
A combination of solar and non-solar tiles will be installed on top of the waterproof underlayment. The solar tiles will be wired to a solar inverter of a solar-integrated Powerwall to complete your new Solar Roof system to meet our quality and performance standards.
How is Solar Roof wired?
The active solar cells in your Solar Roof are wired in series, much like traditional solar panels, to achieve the proper inverter operating voltage.
Does Solar Roof integrate with Powerwall?
Yes. Solar Roof seamlessly integrates with Powerwall.
Do you support the full project from design to Install?
Yes. We will work with you through the entire process from sales, survey, design/engineering, permitting, interconnection, and installation.
When can I start using Solar Roof?
After installation, you can start using Solar Roof when the utility provides Permission to Operate (PTO). PTO requirements vary by region and utility. Your installation team will provide updates as PTO is granted.
