Solar Roof Installation Overview

Removing Existing Roof

Solar Roof is designed to be installed as a new roof or on top of an existing asphalt shingle roof that is in good condition. If you choose to expand the scope of the project to include replacing your existing roof, we will remove your existing roof system down to the decking.

If you have chosen not to replace your existing roof, we will assess its current condition and type to confirm if it is eligible to have Solar Roof installed on top of it. To qualify, your existing roof must at a minimum satisfy the following:

  • Only one layer of asphalt composite roofing
  • Less than 3/8” thickness
  • Free from surface cracks, blisters, curling or excessive granule loss
  • Less than 1” over an 8’ span (L/96) of roof sag
  • Not leaking and flashings in good condition
  • Free from excessive organic growth

STRIP (E.G. 3-TAB) AND LAMINATED SHINGLES LESS THAN 3/8”

LAMINATED SHINGLES GREATER THAN 3/8”

The roofing material on your home will determine if you are eligible for having Solar Roof installed on top of your existing roof, or as a new roof. Learn more about your installation eligibility for Solar Roof or solar panels based on roof type.

What is installed on my home?

A combination of solar and non-solar tiles will be installed on top of the underlayment. Your solar tiles will be wired to an inverter and Powerwall to complete your integrated Solar Roof system.

How is Solar Roof wired?

Solar Roof tiles are wired in series and parallel, much like traditional solar panels, to achieve the proper inverter operating voltage.

Does Solar Roof integrate with Powerwall?

Yes. Solar Roof seamlessly integrates with Powerwall.

Do you support the full project from design to install?

Yes. We will work with you through the entire process from design to power on.

When can I start using Solar Roof?

After installation, you can start using Solar Roof when the utility provides Permission to Operate (PTO). PTO requirements vary by region and utility. Your installation team will provide updates as PTO is granted.
