Prior to delivery, enter trade-in details in your Tesla Account, then receive a final offer that can be applied towards your order. You will hand off your trade-in vehicle during your delivery appointment.

Which vehicles are eligible for trade-in?
Tesla accepts passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs for trade-in value towards a new or used Tesla purchase. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EV) are acceptable for trade-in.
Tesla does not accept motorcycles, RVs or commercial vehicles. Non-drivable vehicles are also not accepted for trade-in.
How does the trade-in process work?
After your order is placed and a VIN has been assigned, a Tesla Advisor will contact you to start the trade-in process. In order to receive a trade-in offer, trade-in details such as your VIN, mileage, zip code and photos must be submitted into your Tesla Account. Tesla will contact you when your trade-in offer is ready for review. Trade-in vehicles must be dropped at your delivery appointment.
Any applicable positive equity can be applied towards the purchase of your new or used Tesla. If you have negative equity, it must be paid either at delivery or rolled into your purchase agreement (pending credit approval).
Trade-In Offers and Valuations
When will I recieve my trade-in offer?
As your delivery date approaches, you will be asked to submit your trade-in details in your Tesla Account. Once submitted, Tesla will provide a final trade-in offer based on current market conditions. Trade-in offers are valid for 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.
How does Tesla determine the price of my trade-in vehicle?
Trade-in values for non-Tesla vehicles are determined based on market data utilizing industry standard tools and resources (pending vehicle history verification).
Trade-in values for Tesla vehicles are determined based on vehicle configuration, history, mileage and age. The resulting value is based on market data and internal Tesla product knowledge.
How do aftermarket vehicle modifications affect trade-in valuations?
Aftermarket vehicle modifications typically have a negative effect on trade-in valuations. It is best for trade-in vehicles to be in ‘stock’ or original state.
Dropping Off Your Trade-In
When can I drop off my trade-in vehicle?
All trade-ins must be dropped off during your scheduled delivery appointment. Tesla cannot accept trade-ins before or after your scheduled delivery appointment.
Can I drop off my trade-in at a different delivery location?
Trade-ins must be dropped off at your assigned delivery location during your scheduled delivery appointment.
Who is required to be present at delivery?
All owners listed on the trade-in vehicle title and/or registration must present at delivery to sign the trade-in documentation. Failure of this could result in delayed delivery.
Will Tesla report the trade-in sale to my state motor vehicle department?
Tesla is not responsible for reporting the trade-in transaction to your state's motor vehicle department. You may be required to notify your state’s motor vehicle department of the pending transaction after your trade-in documents are complete and your trade-in has been transferred to Tesla. For additional details, check with your state’s motor vehicle department.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trade in my vehicle if I’m still actively leasing?
Restrictions on accepted leased trade-ins are dependent on the lessor. The below financial institutes no longer allow third-party buyouts for their leased vehicles. Before placing your order, contact your lender to verify any third-party buyout restrictions.
Can I trade in my vehicle if I’m still actively financing?
Yes. You can trade in your vehicle if you are still making finance payments. Tesla will calculate and compare the pay-off amount and any equity (positive or negative) that will be added to your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement.
Note: Please refrain from paying off your lease or loan in full prior to trading in your vehicle. Any delays in the title receipt may delay your delivery date.
What if the lender is holding my title and the vehicle is titled in KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NY, OK or WY?
If you are actively financing your trade-in and your title is held by a lender in one of these states, request a ‘Letter of Guarantee’ or digital image of the title from your lienholder to provide to your Tesla Advisor. This confirms that you do not hold the title and are eligible to take delivery.
Will Tesla accept a trade-in without a vehicle title?
Trade-in vehicles must be properly titled in the United States to be eligible for trade-in. A physical title is required if you are not actively financing or leasing your trade-in vehicle, or if you are making finance payments in KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NY, OK or WY.
Will Tesla accept vehicles from outside of the United States?
Tesla does not accept vehicles that have been titled or registered outside of the United States.
Does Tesla accept salvaged or branded trade-in vehicles?
Non-Tesla and Tesla vehicles with a salvage, rebuilt, lemon, junk, recycled or not actual miles (NAM) branded title are not eligible for trade-in.
Can I trade in more than one vehicle towards my new Tesla purchase?
Tesla does not accept more than one trade-in vehicle towards the purchase of a new or used vehicle.
What happens to the personal data stored on the vehicle?
Before trading in your vehicle, Tesla requires the vehicle owner to clear their data and restore it to factory settings. This ensures that all your personal information is removed before you trade in your vehicle.
If you are trading in a non-Tesla vehicle, check your Owner’s Manual for guidance on removing your data. If you are trading in a Tesla, tap 'Controls' > 'Service' > 'Factory Reset' on your touchscreen to clear your data and restore to factory settings.
Can I request my trade-in vehicle back if I am unsatisfied with my new vehicle purchase?
Trade-in vehicles cannot be returned once trade-in documents are signed and the transaction is complete. For additional details, review your Trade-In Annex.
Can I trade in a vehicle if my name isn't on the title?
If you are trading in a vehicle that is titled in another person's name, you must transfer the vehicle title of ownership to your name before taking delivery. Tesla will not accept a granted power of attorney in lieu of legal ownership.
